CCH tenants get “rent free” weeks
Tenants of Chorley Community Housing (CCH) are looking forward to their traditional two “rent free” weeks at the end of March.
But for tenants who are behind with their rent, CCH are warning that tenants should continue to pay their rent as normal in order to bring their accounts up to date. And the landlord says that more than half of its tenants owe it rent.
The weeks beginning Monday 19th and Monday 26th March are “rent free” because CCH charges a full year’s rent on its properties but collects it over a 48 week period.
CCH Rent Arrears Recovery Manager Elaine Jackson said: “For those people who are up to date with their rent, the “rent free” weeks is a chance for them to save a few pounds that otherwise would have had to be paid over to us. But if you are in rent arrears you must pay during these two weeks and the full amount paid will be put towards reducing or clearing your debt.”
More than 1 in 2 CCH tenants owe a debt of at least £50, with the rent debt totalling £435,422. CCH say that tenants in arrears must make every effort to pay during these weeks to avoid the threat of action which could result in them losing their homes. Five Chorley tenants owing more than £10,000 between them have already been evicted since January.
Elaine added: “In the next two weeks we will be contacting all tenants who are in arrears to ask them for payments. We will be using a variety of contact methods to allow us to speak to as many people as we can.”
