Gas safety tips at a glance
- Danger signs to report immediately to us:
- Sooting or staining marks on or around gas appliances.
- A yellow or orange lazy flame – not crisp and blue.
- A higher level of condensation than normal in the room where the appliance is installed.
- Anyone in your household suffering from drowsiness, headaches, nausea or pains in the chest when using a gas appliance.
If you notice any of these signs, turn off the appliance immediately and report it to our Gas Safety Freephone 0800 073 0263.
By allowing us access to your home to carry out regular servicing and by following the tips below you can ensure the safety of your gas appliances:
- Make sure you know where your gas meter is located and how to turn off the gas in the event of an emergency
- Never use a gas appliance if you think its not working properly
- Never cover an appliance or block the convection air vents
- Never block or obstruct any fixed ventilation grilles or air bricks
- Never block or cover outside flues
- Never attempt repairs to gas pipe work or gas appliances installed in your home
- Be cautious if buying second hand gas appliances – don’t scrimp on safety
- Certain types of electric fans, including ceiling fans, can affect the safe operation of gas appliance
